To celebrate (??) the end of this glorious week, I’m launching the new weekly series of happy news. YAAAAAAY.
There’s so much violence and tragedy around us in the news (and don’t get me wrong, it’s important to be informed about that too) so I thought I would collect a few happy and positive news from all around the world.
Let’s dive into the good stuff.
First graders learn sign language to communicate with their deaf classmate
Zejd is 6 years old and lives in Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He is also deaf. Last year his mom decided she wanted to send Zejd to school. Teacher Ms Ljumanovic volunteered to help despite no one at the school, including Zejd knowing any sign language. Ms Ljumanovic developed her own tricks and signs to communicate with Zejd, but after a while it wasn’t enough.
So Zejd, his teachers, and his entire class started learning sign language so that they could all communicate together.
Now, a few months on, the first graders at Osman Nakas primary school have all mastered the basics of sign language. Zejd looks forward to going to school, now he is happy and motivated.
Way to go tiny humans, excellent job!!!
Zimbabwe bans child marriage
Former child brides Mudzuru and Tsopodzi stood up for future generations of women and children by taking their case to Zimbabwe’s highest court and winning a ban on marriage, for anyone under the age of 18.
Women reportedly faced life of poverty without access to education after being forced into child marriages. Nearly one-third of girls in Zimbabwe marry before their 18th birthday – some even before they turn 15 – .The lawyer of the two ladies called on Zimbabwe’s legislature to set penalties for the practice.
What a wonderful effort to make the country a safe place for girls, congrats Zimbabwe!!!!
Nearly extinct polecats are back in Britain after 100 years
European polecats, once pushed to the brink of extinction in the UK are making a surprising comeback across Great Britain. These furry little creatures are part of the weasel family once thrived throughout the UK, but by 1915 were found only in a small corner of Scotland. They have a taste for fowl and would steal chickens and kill small game birds leading farmers to hunt them until they were eradicated.
UK Conservationists put up a fight to save the bandit masked critters and succeeded in passing laws forbidding the killing of the polecats. A recent survey found the species can now be spotted in places where they hadn’t been seen in a century.

It’s now illegal for supermarkets to waste food in France
French Parliament took definitive steps to prevent food waste this week. Supermarkets must either compost or donate unsold and nearly expired goods to charity. The law also prohibits stores from pouring bleach over food items (a tactic some used to prevent homeless people from foraging) and mandates that schools across the country begin to educate students on the fight agains food waste. A petition signed by hundreds of thousands of signatures said supermarkets throw away over 44 pounds of food every day.
France is the only country in the world to adopt food waste legistlation of this kind. In the US for example legislation only extends as far as encouraging donations to nonprofit organizations.

Professional Panda Cuddler wanted
You may end up rethinking your choice of career (I definitely do) once you find out that Baby Pand Cuddler is an actual job.
The Giant Panda Protection and Research Center is hiring someone for an annual salary of 32k to spend every waking hour hugging and playing with these adorable fur babies.
You need to be at least 22-years-old, like taking pictures of baby pandas, have a working knowledge of the breed, and be willing to hug, hold, and otherwise stimulate them while ‘sharing in their joys and sorrows’.
The person who lands the full time job in China will be working year-round alongside volunteers from the US, Europe and Japan who only get to be panda nannies for a week or two at a time.

That was the top 5 happy news of this week, I think all of them are really inspiring (especially the panda cuddler position to start a new career) and it’s refreshing to read something that doesn’t involve death, loss, suffer, war, damage etc.
